My family!!

I am so incredibly blessed!

Here are my three favorite guys all working together to spiffy the farm up for the Farm Festival!

Today My Man, My Boy, and My Dad all worked HARD to get the fence fixed and painted.

Meanwhile, My Mom and I went to town to deliver milk, and get more jelly supplies!

She helped me so much to get all the errands completed and food on the table for lunch.

And did I mention....TODAY is the BLOGOVERSARY!!!

Thank YOU so much for being a part of My "family".  I appreciate every comment and like.  It makes me feel incredibly blessed to have your feedback and participation in our farm!

(There will be a separate post for the giveaway)

Harvest Moon

Today was a very busy day!

My parents came up for their "farm" fix.  My dad and the Boy made a great display out front and worked on the water situation (The well has not been functioning correctly for almost 18 months.  But it seems to take 3 years to get things done...lol).  Dad made a temporary fix so we can get city water out to the barn without having to use 7 hoses from the house.

Man made some awesome "hotdog" sticks for Dad in anticipation of the evening!

Mom and I spent the afternoon getting all of the jellies labelled for the Festival.  And also made a few more jars of jelly (Sweet Tea with Lemon Jelly, anyone?)  And also put up more of our Pepperonicis.  My family went through 1 pint at one meal!!  These are canned for our lovely Festival folks though.  I ran out of labels though, so off to town again tomorrow.

Then Dad started up our little backyard bonfire (not the huge one in the field that also needs burned) and we enjoyed campfire hotdogs and marshmellows as we watched the big Harvest Moon come up.

Too busy....

I was too busy today to take any pictures...oh yeah, and also, I don't have a camera....

But good news, I found a replacement camera on eBay and it should be here next week.

My parents have been such a big help on the farm this fall!  They came out and we got so much done.
Dad and I had to do way too much re-wiring on the barn.  One light had an issue and once it was fixed that cause more issues.  But everything is working now.

Dad and I also harvested the last of the sweet corn, then Mom blanched it and we all got it packaged up for the freezer.  10 quarts.  That's besides the 2 dozen for the CSA tomorrow.  This was my first time doing a large scale corn patch.  One half of the patch was blown down about a month ago in a bad storm.

My guys have decided to take an earlier flight and will be home tomorrow afternoon.  I try to do "big" projects when they are away, but haven't even started on it....so I guess, no big project besides corn this time.

Happy Birthday Mom

Today is my Mother-in-law's 93rd birthday.

Portraits taken by K Aulger, September 2013

Man and Boy took a flight out this morning to spend the evening with her.

This will likely be the "Good-bye for now" trip as she went into hospice care last week.

Merry Christmas 2015

Despite 2015 being a challenging year… God is good, all the time.  All the time, God is Good.

At the end of 2014, Man was faced with unplanned heart surgery.  He came through with flying colors, but it was a slow road getting strength and stamina back. We had to stop working our Buckeye Bunkbeds when he became ill last year, and it would seem that our time as Buckeye Bunkbeds has come to an end.  In the meantime, as Man was recovering, we have had some new adventures to fill in the gaps!
In February, we took an epic trip out west and missed some of the coldest temperatures in Ohio.  It was so fun to show Boy all the things we love in Colorado and Arizona. We made a “bucket list” of all the things we wanted to see and do, and almost every one was completed!!  In addition, we were able to spend time with “Aunt Micki” and “Grandma Arizona”.
We returned to the farm and the work of keeping warm.  Man and Boy spent much time honing the craft of turning wood pens.  Man even worked on casting his own blanks and resin casting other softer woods to harden them into a good turning medium.  He discovered that some of the wood on our firewood pile was actually some of the ‘coveted’ Spalted Ambrosia Maple and many pieces of firewood became pens and actually were one of our best sellers when we started doing craft fairs this summer/fall.
My winter was occupied with my growing herd of cows.  We have Hershey, our dairy cow.  Then she gave birth last summer to twin girl calves.  They are going to be future milkers. (Frances and Miracle).  So then, in February, I bought a bottle steer.  He, unfortunately, became ill and after round-the- clock nursing for 10 days, he did not make it.  When we returned from Arizona, I had the opportunity to get another calf to grow for beef.  He has settled in very well, and is growing nicely!  His name is Moo-steer T-Bone. My winter-keeping cows.  It is more time consuming than you would think!
Spring finally came (as it always does - God is Good!) and our thoughts turned to outside work.  We prepared the garden but did not do our CSA this year.  Boy started getting serious about bike riding and actually rode in his first race.  He also started working on his 4H fair rabbit projects.  He also started wearing glasses.  He has wanted glasses his whole life-always wanting to be like Daddy-and now he has them.
Summer came and things were in full swing around here.  My mom had surgery on her shoulder L, so I was able to go down and help at their house some. I love being able to be with my parents and try to shower them with love and care as they have always done for me!  Boy went to the same camp that he has gone to for 5 years (only one year at a different camp) and was delighted to find that the same kids he sees almost every year at camp were there again. He’s already looking forward to camp next year.  We acquired a new tractor to help with farm chores and worked on putting up hay for the winter.  Man perfected Smokin Meat!!   Every week he would try a new technique or meat, and boy, we ate well.  We invited some family friends out for BBQs and had some nice fellowship.
As summer drew to a close, our thoughts turned to our, now, annual “Fall Farm Festival”.  I started making my jams and jellies in earnest. 212 jars (and 22 unique flavors) later…  We also had the guys’ pens, a produce table, and a bake sale table (with bread and over 400 cookies-7 kinds).  We had 14 vendors (Including my cousin that drove 400 miles to participate!) and a great selection of items.  It was during a football game so didn’t get as much traffic as I hoped, but we all had a good time.  Plus, Man made BBQ!  Any day with BBQ ribs is a good day!
After being in 4H for a few years, Boy was able to finally take his rabbits to fair.  (Each year something has happened that kept us from fair).  It was a new (and nerve wracking) experience.  He got a good score on his project book.  Judging was definitely a new experience, and he now knows what to expect next year.  After the animal auction, he was so excited to take his project again next year (and do even better) and maybe even branch out into the dairy arena.
Then we started our first day of high school-gasp!! Where did the time go??? We had a monarch cocoon that we found in the field and the butterfly emerged on the same morning that we were starting Boy’s high school career.  (God is so good!)  Just a few weeks ago, he started violin lessons.  He has wanted to play for a while now, and he is very sure that the violin is what he is best suited for.
Speaking of music, that has become the newest thing in our house.  Man has been singing for some time, but as the weather turned and it is not as fun to get outside to cook, he has started seriously working on his singing. It is a joy to hear him lifting his voice and Praising God! He has been working with a large barbershop society called the Singing Buckeyes and may join them in the New Year.  Also, he has been meeting and singing with a great ministry called Paradigm Shift that does a weekly internet.  Boy is also helping out with the broadcasts.
And through all this-I keep cows!  That sounds a bit simplistic, however it isn’t.  I feel it is truly a gift that I have gotten from my Heavenly Father.  Many others that have my same disease are not able to even leave their house.  I feel my Trigeminal Neuralgia progressing, but I am blessed to still be able to go and “work my farm”.  And I know that it is not by MY power.  It is by His strength by which I am able.  I don’t forget it for a day, so when I say “I keep cows” it is my phrase of Praise!  (it’s also so much fun that my Daddy here is also totally enamored by the cows and offers to get them sweaters in the winter and currently cow bells for Christmas J )
We are praying you have a truly blessed Christmas and feel the love of Jesus throughout the New Year!

Merry Christmas,
Love, Rea, Man and Boy

I am Thankful for....Day 7

Yesterday I was thankful for family that are friends...
today I am thankful for the friends that become family!

I've read a saying that friends are the family you choose....
...and I have been blessed with some very special ones!

First is Reyn BFF.  We have been friends for ....mumble...mumble...well, I'm not going to put how many years but since we were both in 2nd grade FOREVER ago.  She and I were both the "new girls" as we moved to the school district at about the same time.

She shouted in a boy's ear that was harassing me....and we've been BFFs ever since.  She is one of my most diligent encouragers of my blog and leaves comments all the time so I know that I'm not just writing to the wind.  She has always been an encouragement to me and has supported me in everything...hairbrained or not!  She is my sounding board, my joy, and is one of those friends that you can call at 3 am crying and making no sense...and she understands.

I'm so, so blessed...
My Soul Sisters
Second, are the ladies and their families that have come into our lives and stayed.  Our kids are friends, our hubbies are friends, and we all have a great time together.

Me and KA (the awesome lady that recently did our portraits!
and the one that takes cryptic FB posts and comes to the rescue)

Not the greatest picture...I don't have a picture of my friend, HH, probably because she's frequently off patching up a booboo on one of their 5 kids-the oldest son is Boy's BFF)

Finally for today is a relatively new friend, that I only know through the internet, but I have been blessed beyond measure by her words and support.  My dear Man used to tease me about my "imaginary" friends on the internet.  And SP is my BIFF (Best Imaginary Friend Forever) that has made the leap despite the fact that we might run into one another at Lowe's and not even recognize each other (grin).  She was my first "cow" friend and has been a support to me in my first year of cow ownership.  But it was when Bess became ill, that we became very close.  She was asking all the time via IM how she was doing.  Helping me to cope...knowing that despite a cow being "just a farm animal" how attached you can be.  It was then that we started to explore and expand our friendship until now I consider her a soul sister too.  (And am considering moving to her farm in Tennessee!)

Just yesterday, I was chatting with both my cousin BFF, and my BIFF.  I said basically the same thing about my day to both of them (in separate chats) and they both came back with the SAME response!

I am wonderfully Blessed and so very thankful to have these lovely women to share my confidences and heart with, knowing that they will come along side of me and pray for me.  There are many people that I consider my friends, and I love them for what they are to me, but for most there are only little segments and pieces of my life that they share....unlike these 4 women that know it all...and love me anyway!

I am Thankful for...Day 6

I am so thankful Family that are Friends.
Families have all kinds of quirks and we don't always agree and get along...but we are always family.  I'm grateful for the family in our lives.

My Cousin and BFF (and my cow!)

I love all of my family!  I have a very, very special relationship with my Cousin/BFF.  We talk on the phone almost every day or IM.  We are the closest in age in our family.  Our fathers are brothers, but in my heart she is my sister.  She coined the term a few weeks ago, that I was her "Soul's Twin."  Brings tears to my eyes and is so true.  We have joked that we are a "driving force" in one another's lives...mainly because we have to drive to see each other.  (We have always lived at least 400 miles apart).

Until we meet again....

Sadly, the week passed way too quickly and it was time for Grandma Arizona to head for home.  We were so blessed that she could come out and spend time with us.  We would keep here all the time if we could.

We'll miss you!

Family Portraits

The number one most important thing on my list of things to do while Man's Mom was here was to get family portraits done. We have never done portraits as a family.  A good friend of ours met us at a local park and took tons of pictures and we got some nice ones.  Funny enough, out of over 200 pictures, there is only one of the three of us....so we may have to do it again before Christmas.  We also want to get it done with my parents, too, but that may have to wait til spring (my parents winter in Florida and are about to leave.)  Below are some of the proofs:

Creation Museum

We took a road trip down to Cincinnati to take Grandma Arizona to the
Creation Museum.  What a wonderful day.  We enjoyed all the exhibits and shows.  We saw the new planetarium show about ISON.

My favorite room is all the models of Noah's Ark.
